Two Years In A Row Means It’s A Tradition, Right?

I’m realizing that I am a huge dork for Christmas lights. We visited Peacock Lane last year. I even said last year that “I’m a huge dork for Christmas lights.” I guess a year is just enough time for me to forget how much of a dork I am.

Again, we went to Horse Brass first. I enjoy any tradition that involves going to Horse Brass, getting a goddamned pot pie, and drinking a chocolate stout. Chocolate stout, because I’m an amateur beer drinker, and because I’m a girl, and I like gimicky beers with fruit or chocolate or vanilla in them.

This year, no rain. Because there was no rain, there were a lot more people. And we missed the Pedestrian Only Opening night, so there was some traffic. We parked our car a few blocks over and walked.

There were lots of people and younger kids and strollers. And people like me who stopped in front of every house to take photos. You can’t be in a hurry when you go see the pretty shiny lights.

There were some cars, but they drove very slowly and some drove without headlights.

I wonder how much the electricity goes up for the houses in this neighborhood during the holidays.

Doesn’t it seem like “holiday light technology” has exploded in the past 10 years or so? Remember when there were only two holiday light choices? Big bulbs or little bulbs? And then either white or colored lights. And as a kid, I wondered, why would anyone choose just plain old while lights? What’s the point?

Then, remember when “icicle” lights came out? It was like a door to another universe opened up. Now we have animatronic reindeer and blow up Santas.

I was doing all I could to stand to the side to hold the camera still enough to take photos, while also not holding up the line too much.

The hot chocolate line.

So, I’m a dork for holiday lights. Also, I’m a dork for fireworks. I also like impressionist paintings, and volcanoes.

I am NOT a dork for parades, usually. Maybe I marched in one too many when I was a band nerd in high school. Shut up! I played the drums! I was a SUPER COOL nerd for being a girl that played the drums.

Also, I’m NOT a dork for musicals. I get squirmy when people seem to be going along, doing whatever they are doing, and then they break out into a song. I can’t suspend my disbelief. I can’t help but think what would happen if people did that in real life. Maybe they would be arrested. Plus it would make me uncomfortable and embarrassed on their behalf. Maybe if I saw it more often, I’d be okay with people spontaneously breaking into songs. But for now, I think it’s a natural response for me to be squirmy.

I guess what I’m trying to say, is that if you break into a song around me, I’ll call the cops.

Happy holidays.
